Popcorn words!

Our weekly popcorn words are sight words chosen from the Dolch pre-primer and primer list. For reference on the weekly words, please check your child's take home binder!

We've been working hard in kindergarten on learning and using our popcorn words (words chosen from the Dolch pre-primer & primer list)! Please help your child study them every day. We read with buddies and independently and look out for our weekly words:

It helps to point them out in stories, signs, newspapers...anything really!

We trace our weekly popcorn words in salt:

use pokey pins:

cut them out in play doe and wikki stix:

These are fantastic ideas to try at home!

Writers' Workshop Part 1

We've been plowing through writing (independently!!) since December. We begin by sharing what we like to do. This helps the students understand that their thoughts, ideas, likes, and wants are important. Here are some pictures showing the children's amazing progress the last two months!
We start simple-writing one sentence using the current week's popcorn words.
From here, we add a character we know-Pete the Cat.
We constantly practice identifying and using words on the word wall.
Find the word, touch it and write it!

We write about things we like. What is important to us as kindergarteners?

We talk about what we want to be when we grow up.
What do these community helpers do?

Next week, we will begin telling stories that can be real or make believe. From here, we will work on characters and sequence of events (beginning, middle and end of a story).

February delights!

We had such an eventful month! We celebrated Catholic School's Week, 100th Day, Groundhogs day Valentine's Day and finally, Mardi Gras!!

Our 100th Day celebration was fantastic! Check out our many 100th day themed centers.
-100th day sentence ordering & reading
-Candy sorts
-100 out of tangrams
-100th day crowns and glasses
-What would I do with $100 writing

Groundhogs day was the same day as our 100th day. However, up to the 2nd, we had been learning about weather. The children were so excited to predict spring or more winter!

Last week, we had our massive Valentine's day party. My kindergarteners spoiled us rotten! Tons of candy to share. We wrote about our favorite part of valentines day...saved wrappers from our favorite candy (yet to be put into the classbook....).

Finally, yesterday, we celebrated Mardi Gras! I have no idea how much glitter we used...but it will be in the school carpeting for a long time to come.

More to come soon...with updated centers!

Hoppy Wednesday!
